On 3rd December, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. onwards, at Rabindra Manch, Baghajatin Park, Siliguri, Dist: Darjeeling, Indian Institute of Legal Studies had undertaken a “Project for rendering Legal Aid on Consumer Related Issues Through Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism System” within The Sub Division of Siliguri, District Darjeeling, jointly undertaken by the Office of the Sub – Divisional Officer, Siliguri, in collaboration with the State Legal Services Authority, West Bengal. The Hon’ble Mr. Justice Aniruddha Bose, Judge, Calcutta High Court, Executive Chairman, West Bengal Legal Services Authority, was the Chief Guest, on the occasion. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Judge, Calcutta High Court, delivered the keynote address. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Soumitra Pal, former Judge, Calcutta High Court, graced the occasion as Special Guest of Honour. The District Judiciary, Civil Administration, Police administration and other Local Authorities were present as guests of honour. Five consumer related cases were identified by the IILS Legal Aid Committee, which were speedily disposed off, by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Aniruddha Bose, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Joymalya Bagchi along with Hon’ble Mr. Justice Soumitra Pal, another set of ten cases were identified which was disposed off by the Bench appointed by the West Bengal Legal Service Authority at the same time.
On 25th November, 2016, Indian Institute of Legal Studies received the prestigious “Dewang Mehta National Education Awards” at Taj Lands End, Mumbai. The Dewang Mehta Awards recognizes talent and leadership amongst the Educational Institutes across India. Shri. Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS received the award from the Jury, Dr. Prasad Medury, Partner, Amrop India Consultants Pvt. Ltd. and the Patron Mr. Harish Mehta, Chairman & Managing Director, Onward Technologies Ltd. The Awards was presented in the Memory of Late Dewang Mehta and was in recognition of Leadership, development, innovation and industry interface of the Institute.
On 1st December, 2016, a s-pecial lecture was delivered by Mr. Suresh Mishra, G.M. (Law) and Regional Chief, HUDCO at 10:30 a.m. at Conference Hall of the College. The theme for the lecture was "Prospects for Law students in Banking and Financial Institution". The students of 5 years Semester VII and IX witnessed the educative lecture and were benefitted by diverse knowledge in the field.
Under the desire and guidance of Shri. Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman of Indian Institute of Legal Studies, the students of IILS, Dagapur has organized the 1st Youth Mock Parliament on 26th Nov, 2016 on the eve of National Law Day. Students from 11 schools and colleges participated in the event. It started at 11:30 am with the inauguration ceremony. We had Mr. Dawa Lama, Senior Joint Commissioner, Commercial Tax, Prof. Raghunath Ghosh, Senior Professor in philosophy, University of North Bengal, Mr. Kanchan Halder, Commercial Tax Officer and Mr. Milan Ruchal, Income Tax Officer as judges. We had Mrs. Ruchi Agarwal, Asst. Prof. of Law, IILS, as the Speaker of the Parliament. There were 48 student participants from various institutions of Siliguri and adjacent areas. The topic for discussion on 26th of Nov was GST (Goods and Service Tax) Bill. On 26th Nov the house had a discussion on what is GST and both the merits and demerits of GST, whether it is beneficiary in a long run? It started with the national anthem, followed by the inauguration ceremony, the oath taking ceremony, the statements by the MPs. After that we had a discussion hour, question hour, zero hour, calling attention motion. The bill was finally read over by the Speaker and was passed by majority. On 27th of Nov the topic of discussion was LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) and on the same day the Institute had the valedictory session. The President of the session was Hon’ble Shri Joyjit Choudhury, Chairmal, IILS, Chief Guest for the Valedictory session was Hon’ble Shri. Ashok Bhattacharya, Mayor, Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Special Guest of Honour was Hon’ble Shri Shankar Malakar, Member of Legislative Assembly, West Bengal and Hon’ble Dr. Ganeshji Tiwari, Principal, Sikkim Government Law College. The valedictory session was followed by the certificate and prize distribution ceremony and came to an end with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ishita Chatterjee, Vice Principal, IILS.
On 25th November, 2016, legal aid and awareness camp was organized at the Office of the Block Development Officer, Dwarka Hall, Naxalbari. Mrs. Sejuti Pal Maity, Joint B.D.O., Naxalbari initiated the programme. The guests present in the programme were Mr. Nimai Ch. Barman, Sub – Inspector, Naxalbari, Police Station, Mr. Wasim Akram, Asst. Prof. of English, Naxalbari College, Miss Chandrani Goswami, ASHA facilitator of Matigara. The programme started with small speech of Joint B.D.O followed by legal awareness presentation by Mrs. Tanushree Sharma, Asst. Prof of Law, IILS, Miss. Rupa Pradhan, Asst. Prof of Law, IILS and students from IILS. The session was very interactive. Vote of Thanks was given by Mr. Nimai Ch. Barman, Sub – Inspector, Naxalbari and extended his willingness to extend his support and assistance whenever needed for such programmes that benefits the society at large.
The students of IILS have come forth with the theme “students make aware the students” whereby they have been holding legal awareness programmes in various institutes throughout the district of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri. They have taken up this initiative to uphold the cause of imparting legal education to the masses at large, especially focusing on the youths of today who will be the future of tomorrow. They have been fostering legal education on contemporary legal issues that include “Cyber Crimes”, “ Human Trafficking”, “Anti Ragging” and “ Road Safety” which are of utmost importance in today’s world. IILS students make aware other youths by way of power point presentations, seminars and drama that depicts the issues and challenges in today’s world.
Teacher’s day is the day of appreciation for teachers and is celebrated in most of the countries. The date for celebrating teacher’s day varies from one country to another. Bangladesh celebrates Teachers Day on 5th October, while in Bhutan it is celebrated on 2nd of May; United States celebrates National Teacher Day on Tuesday during Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place in the first full week of May while in India we celebrate Teacher’s Day on 5th of September each year. India celebrates Teachers Day on 5th September which is the birth anniversary Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Virswami who is one of the most influential thinkers of modern India. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Virswami became the President of India (1962 – 1967), it is said that when his friends and his students insisted him to celebrate his birthday , he requested them “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.” Since then each year, 5th of September is celebrated as teachers day in India. The most important pillars in a students life are teachers. To appraise their great contribution the students of IILS organized Teacher’s day programme at the college premises on 5th September which started from 10:00 a.m. and continued all day long. The occasion was graced by Hon’ble Shri Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS who gave his inspiring speech denoting teaching not as a profession but as ones religion, he further enlightened the house with the reason behind celebrating teachers day and its importance. Hon’ble Shri Joyjit Choudhuri further encouraged the students as well as teachers with his words of wisdom. The programme started with the inaugural speech and cutting of cake, further various cultural programmes, songs, dance were performed by the students. The students took all efforts to make it enjoyable as well as memorable day for the teachers by keeping various fun competitions in which all teachers participated and continued all day long. The programme ended with a vote of thanks giving by Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharjee, Principal (Officiating), IILS.
On 24th August, 2016, Indian Institute of Legal Studies organized a “Fresher’s Welcome Programme” for the new batches of this year. The programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Chairman Sri Joyjit Choudhury. The Chairman addressed the students with his motivational speech. The students were all dressed in different colors and the campus was filled with bright colors. Various programmes and small games were organized by the senior students. Lunch was served and for student’s entertainment there was a live Dj on stage.
On the auspicious occasion of “70th Independence Day of India” 15th August 2016, the IILS family observes and celebrates this grand event in the college premises itself. As rightly said by the First Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of our independence day “At the stroke of midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom….India discovers herself again.” More than 200 years of slavery under the British rule and finally the most awaited hour of our independence which is cherished till date. The celebration was graced by Honorable Shri Ajit Choudhury, Founder member of the Ashwini Choudhury Educational Trust, Shri Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS, Faculty members and students. At sharp 9.00 a.m. the programme started whereby the Tri-Colour Flag was hoisted by Honorable Shri Ajit Choudhury, followed by National Anthem. Thereafter, the programme resumed at the Lecture Room within the IILS premises. The Honorable Chairman with his vast knowledge and vision illuminated the students about the importance of our hard won independence. He also laid emphasis about various phases of the revolt for independence since 1857 to 1947. The Chairman also highlighted on the significance of our Tri-colour flag. The celebration was then followed by the cultural programme organized by the students. There were patriotic songs, speeches and dance performances followed by a skit wherein the historical significance was outlined. We were even privileged to hear a student of IILS hailing from Bhutan who spoke about the importance of Independence Day of India. The programme was concluded by a vote of thanks from the Vice-Principal of IILS.
Indian Institute of Legal Studies organized a BLOOD DONATION camp in the campus in association with A Unit of Lions Club of Siliguri Terai, Dist 322F, 2nd Mile, Sevoke Road, Siliguri on 14th August, 2016. On the eve of the independence day as a mark of patriotic feeling, the blood donation camp was organized to create awareness about blood donation amongst the student community. The team of doctors arrived at the scheduled time of 9:00 am at the venue. We officially started with the camp at 10:00 am after the setup was complete. Volunteers from students committee were present at the venue for the help. Volunteers were engaged in process of registration of the donors who were students and faculty members of IILS and also looking after the refreshments for them. All the donors were provided with water, glucose biscuits, tea and snacks. The donors received certificate of recognition and a donor’s card, using which one unit of blood is available free from Blood Bank in next one year. We received an overwhelming response from blood donors. The blood donation camp is organized mainly with a motive of helping the organization with the collection of blood for the purpose of helping the society.
IILS organizes various special lectures for the benefit of the students. On 12th and 14th August 2016, Prof. (Doctor) Kushal Vibhuti, Dean, IIT Kharagpur and a renowned author of many books on Criminal Laws delivered a special lecture to the students of IILS on the “Criminology” in the Lecture Room in IILS premises. He pointed out the basic rules of criminology. He also shared his experience during the process of studying criminal law. He also advised those who desire to have an in-depth study of criminal law to create such ambience whereby the learning process becomes fruitful. He also suggested books for personal reference and advised students to read to enhance their knowledge in the legal field. He emphasized on the importance of Criminal Laws and its relationship with other Statutes which is very essential in a legal profession. It was an enlightening opportunity for the students and as well as for the institute.
IILS BESTOWED WITH THE PRESTIGIOUS ABP NEWS National Education Awards, 2016. The ABP NEWS National Education Awards recognize institutions that are innovative, modern & industry related in their curriculum in Marketing, Advertising, Marketing Communications, Engineering & Technology etc. The awards are well researched and chosen by an independent jury and a panel of professionals who believe in nurturing Talent and in recognizing the best of the best. The Jury decided to honour Indian Institute of Legal Studies consecutively for the second year with the prestigious Education Leadership Award, 2016 .The award is in recognition of leadership, development and marketing an institute and industry interface. Also, further, it is in recognition of all the initiatives undertaken by the institute in imparting and furtherance of legal education in the North –east region of the country. The ABP NEWS National Education Awards was scheduled on 23rd June, 2016 at the Taj Lands End, Bandra, Mumbai where the representative of the College was present to receive the said award.
On 28th and 29th of May, 2016, IILS organized its yearly event IILSZIYUM FEST 2016 at the College Campus. The event was a grand success where students from various schools and colleges in Siliguri and the Northern Hilly Area of West Bengal participated with all their enthusiasm. On 28th various competitions were organized that included art and craft, creative writing, dance, antakshari, runway show and singing competitions. The students had set up various stalls for entertainment. On 29th after the various competitions, awards were given to the winning teams and the most awaited event i.e. the IILSZIYUM Beats took place where bands from different colleges participated and towards the end renowned band ‘Hypnosys’ played on stage.
On 30th of April, 2016, farewell ceremony for the outgoing batch of 2016, IILS, was organized by the students of IILS within the college premises. The ceremony was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chairman Shri Joyjit Choudhury. After the inauguration few students who are passing out from IILS shared their experience in their journey of IILS. The students wore their Gown and Cap, they were presented memento and sash as a mark of respect and seniority. The ceremony was followed by the cake cutting trend of IILS on farewells after which various programmes were organized and dinner for the students with live Dj on stage for student’s entertainment.
The Indian Institute of Legal Studies has been able to establish a tradition of conducting the highly prestigious award ceremony where the institute undertakes the initiative of felicitating the meritorious students for their academic excellence in every academic session as a mark of appreciation for the extraordinary performance and overall excellence by the students. With this belief, the institute had organized the felicitation ceremony in appreciation for academic excellence to the meritorious students in the academic session 2015-16 on 15/05/16 at 12:30 pm at the Conference Hall, University of North Bengal. The ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Somadder and the Hon’ble Justice Arindam Sinha, Judges of the Calcutta High Court along with Dr. Nupur Das, Secretary, Under Graduate Council, University of North Bengal, Smt. Priyanka Dhar Kapur, I.R.S., Dy. Commssioner of Income Tax, Siliguri, Mr. Rajanvir Singh Kapur, IAS., Sub-Divisional Officer, Siliguri and Shri. Joyjit Choudhury, Hon’ble Chairman, IILS. The ceremony was greatly supported by the guardians by their gracious presence and participation in the efforts of the College in creating an environment of continuous evaluation and constant growth. It is a matter of immense honour and pride for the institute to get a remarkably outstanding performance of 191 students with first class results and exceptionally brilliant result by the College topper, Ms. Tenzin Yangzom of 5 Yrs BBA.LL.B – Sem –IV who secured a total of 400 out of 500 marks that is 80%. She is a student hailing from Bhutan. She was also granted the Full Bright Scholarship for the academic session 2016-17 by the College Authority and the surprise moment of the day was when Shri. Joyjit Choudhury, Hon’ble Chairman, IILS made an interesting declaration by presenting her an apple i-pad on his personal behalf as a sign of appreciation to the topper but also as a sign of motivation for the rest of the students to do better in future. The ceremony was successful in the sense that it created a platform for the guardians to share their views too. Some of the guardians came up to the podium and shared their views and best wishes for the success of the students. The ceremony was concluded by the enlightening and encouraging words of the Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Somadder, Judge, Calcutta High Court. The ceremony was concluded by a vote of thanks to all the distinguished dignitaries on the Dias, guardians, students, faculty members, non-teaching staffs, the University and the media houses.
