SUMMIT ON LEGAL EDUCATION IN SAARC REGION-- Summit of Legal Education vis-à-vis Social Development organized under the stewardship of Hon’ble Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, Indian Institute of Legal Studies on 28th and 29th March, 2015. The SAARC Law Summit aims to reform, innovate, reorient and to have a paradigm shift in our system towards creating legal professionals that can meet the upcoming challenges in the SAARC region and to develop a serious research culture among SAARC countries which is of international standard. Shri Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman of Indian Institute of Legal Studies started the Summit with welcome address by focusing on regional integration which is a dynamic process in which states willingly enter into a regional agreement to share or unify into a larger whole in order to enhance regional cooperation through regional institutions and rules. He further stated in his speech about the objectives of the regional integration which range from economic to political to environmental. The Chief Guest for programme was the Hon’ble Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, Judge, Supreme Court of India, who has delivered keynote address stating SAARC as a regional organization for socio- economic development of the South Asian Region which serves as a platform for these countries to work together in a spirit of friendship, trust, and understanding to accelerate economic and social development in this region.. As a special Guest of Honour, Hon’ble Justice K Sipavan, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Sri Lanka was the president of the programme. His Lordship delivered presidential address and enlightened the august gathering regarding the development objective of SAARC countries and identified different areas of cooperation like; human resource development and education being the important one. Hon’ble former Chief Justice of Afghanistan, Abdul Salam Azimi had graced the occasion as special guest of honour. His Lordship Abdul Salam Azimi had chaired Third Technical Session whereby he moderated and given his valuable inputs. Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Somadder. Judge, Calcutta High Court, had presented analysis of the conference proceeding by pin pointing important points, valuable comments and suggestions and Hon’ble Justice Lungten Dubgyur, Judge High Court of Bhutan were the Guests of Honour for the inaugural. Justice Lungten Dubgyur had presented paper under the sub theme “Unification of the basic principles of law among the SAARC countries” where his lordship talked about common law or principles for the progress of SAARC nations as other regional cooperation’s like; European Union (EU), NAFTA, MERCOSUR, ASEAN, etc. Joint Attorney General of Nepal and Lt Gen G.S Chandel, YSM, GOC were special invitees for the programme as Guest of Honour. Vice Chancellor, Deans and Professor from various National Law School, Indian Institute of Technology are speakers for the technical session. All the speakers and academics focused on institutional building and strengthening, coordination of economic and social policy, harmonization of external relations and governance. Guests were felicitated by the students of IILS by presenting them with bouquets and mementos and finally to conclude the session vote of thanks was delivered by Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Sommader, Judge, High Court of Calcutta, whereby his lordship thanked all the judges, academics, government officials, faculty members, staffs and specially students of Indian Institute of Legal Studies (IILS) for making this event a great success by taking this unique initiative with regards to the legal education in South Asia. The inaugural ceremony was concluded with the national anthem of India.
Indian Institute of Legal Studies celebrated 66th Republic Day in the college campus. Every year the college celebrates the Republic Day with great honour. The Constitution of India came into force on this day in the year 1950. It had replaced the Government of India Act, 1935. In the Institute the National Flag was hoisted by the respected member of the Governing Body of the college Shri Ajit Choudhury in presence of respected Chairman, Principal & other faculty members. The Flag was hoisted with the slogan "Bande Mataram" by the Students.
Vasant Panchami is the day of Saraswati puja, the goddess of knowledge and arts. This festival is celebrated every year on the 5th day or ‘Panchami’ of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magha. Indian Institute of Legal Studies celebrated this day with prompt and grandeur with the students participating in the celebration spontaneously on 24th January; 2015.The Chairman Mr. Joyjit Choudhury joined the students in their celebration and all prayed to the God for her blessing. The celebration concluded with the distribution of prasad among all present for the Saraswati puja.

A symposium on "Impact of Medical Negligence on Right to Health : Emerging Trends" was held on 10th January 2015, the Hon'ble Dr.Mamjula Chellur,the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court was the Chief Guest in the Programme. Hon'ble Justice Biswanath Sommadder was also present to grace the occasion.Eminent doctors of Siliguri were also present. The students of IILS from across all the semester presented the leading case laws on Medical Negligence through power point presentation (PPT) which was appreciated by all the dignitaries present during the presentation. There was an interactive session on Medical Negligence chaired by Justice Biswanath Sommadder which enlightened all the participants including the eminent Doctors and the Students.
The Indian Institute of Legal Studies has been selected for the 22nd Dewang Mehta Business School Awards scheduled on 15th November 2014 at Taj Lands End, Mumbai in the "Education Leadership Award" category in recognition of the high quality of teaching-learning methods, all round grooming of students, practical training, co-curricular programmes, innovative academic practices and best methods of governance which have been implemented in the college. The Chairman, Indian Institute of Legal Studies received the award in person on Nov. 15. The Citation is published in Current Notice.
The Vertical Interaction Course ( VIC ) of senior IPS Officers at national – level on “ Criminal Justice System : Need for Co-ordination” was conducted during Nov.3 till 7th Nov.,2014. The VIC is approved by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (B.P.R.&D. ), Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi. The VIC was inaugurated by Hon'ble Justice Biswanath Somadder , Judge, Calcutta High Court as Chief Guest. Mr.Joyjit Choudhury, Chairman, IILS presented the Welcome Address. Prof. Somnath Ghosh , Vice-Chancellor, NBU presided over the session. Mr.Jawed Shamim, IG, North Bengal and D.M., Darjeeling could not attend but they sent message of greetings. Mr. H.K.Sood, I.G. BSF, HQ NB FTR could not be present as Special Guest due to urgent office work. Certificate of Participation was presented to the Participants by Justice Roy. Mr.Anjan Chakraborty, IPS,Principal, Central Detective Training School, Kolkata, under B.P.R.&.D. was present as the B.P.R.&D. Observer.
Dr.Md.Yasin, Professor in Political Science, University of North Bengal delivered a Special Lecture on 15.9.14 at 12 noon before an audience comprising students of B.A. LL.B. semester I,III and V. The Lecture was on the principal features of democratic governance in India drawing its strength from the Indian Constitution. Prof. Yasin also deliberated on the linkage between Political Science as a subject of study in LL.B. courses and Constitutional Law. The presentation was followed by intense discussion and interaction with the students.
A Programme to provide Legal Aid to the poor and marginalized people was organized by students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies on 31.8.14 at Nanda Prasad High School, Naxalbari in association with Darjeeling Police and Lions Club of Naxalbari. A large number of distinguished citizens of Naxalbari were present besides students of the local schools and the residents in and around Naxalbari. The laws relating to early marriage of girls before age of 20 yrs., registration of marriage, procedure of birth / death registration and settlement and redress of common disputes which impact the daily lives of the villagers were discussed in details. The speakers included Mr.Sourav Sen, O.C. of Naxalbari P.S. and Mr.Indranath Dey, Mr.Sayantan Mukherjee, Mr.Amit Dutta, Mr.Suparswa Chakraborty, all teachers of Indian Institute of Legal Studies. Some students of the college also addressed the participants and explained the legal provisions. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Narendra Prasad.
A Symposium entitled “ Role of Media in Justice Delivery System " was held on 12.5.14 at 12 noon in the Indian Institute of Legal Studies in collaboration with the Siliguri Journalists' Club. The Symposium was attended by the representatives of the Media in Siliguri besides our teachers and students. Hon’ble Justice Biswanath Somadder and Hon'ble Justice Arindam Sinha, Judges of Calcutta High Court kindly graced the Symposium as the Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively and present their views in the Symposium. A Panel Discussion on the Topic was held after the inaugural session participated by the Hon'ble Judges and senior media personnel. Dainik Jagran, Siliguri was the media partner of the Symposium and its contribution in organising the even is sincerely acknowledged.
* A Special Lecture on “The Indian evidence Act” was delivered by Hon’ble Justice Arindam Sinha, Judge, Calcutta High Court on 11.5.14 during 3 pm to 4.30 pm in the Conference Hall of the University of North Bengal, Administrative Building. *The Indian Institute of Legal Studies is proud and delighted to announce that a total of 85 students have obtained First Class rank in the examinations of the University of North Bengal held in December, 2013. The over-all success rate is as high as 94%. The students were felicitated in a ceremony held on 11.5.14 at 3 pm in the Conference Hall of the University of North Bengal, Administrative Building. Hon’ble Justice B.Somadder, Judge, Calcutta High Court and Hon’ble Justice A.Sinha, Judge,Calcutta High Court kindly graced the ceremony as Guests of Honour and felicitated the students. The performance of all the qualified students were also appreciated in the programme. *The parents of all the students were present in the felicitation ceremony.
