Debate Competition on the Occasion of International Women's Day at the Indian Institute of Legal Studies, Siliguri

The Indian Institute of Legal Studies, Siliguri successfully organized a Debate Competition on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 7th March 2026.

This year’s celebration aligned with the theme of International Women’s Day 2026 – “Give to Gain”, highlighting the importance of collective efforts, support, and shared responsibility in advancing gender equality and empowering women in all spheres of society.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across various programmes including 5-Year B.A. LL.B., B.B.A. LL.B., B.Com LL.B. (Hons.), 3-Year LL.B., LL.M., and MPG.

The competition was divided into two categories based on semesters.

Group A, comprising students from the junior semesters of the 5-Year Law programmes and the 3-Year LL.B., debated on the motion: “The House Believes That Gender Equality in India Remains a Constitutional Promise Rather Than a Social Reality.” The group saw an impressive 34 participants presenting insightful arguments and engaging in thought-provoking discussions.

Group B, consisting of senior semester students of the 5-Year Law programmes, 3-Year LL.B., along with LL.M. and MPG scholars, debated on the motion: “The House Asserts That the Under-Representation of Women in the Higher Judiciary Reflects a Structural Constitutional Failure.” This category witnessed 14 participants delivering well-researched perspectives and compelling rebuttals.

The occasion was graced by Mrs. Nandita Choudhury, Member of the Governing Body, Indian Institute of Legal Studies, and Dr. Trishna Gurung, Principal In-Charge, whose presence and words of encouragement greatly motivated the participants.

The competition provided a vibrant academic platform for students to critically engage with important constitutional and socio-legal issues surrounding gender justice, representation, and equality, reflecting the spirit and significance of International Women’s Day.
