Experiential Learning in Consumer Protection Law: Educational Visit to District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Jalpaiguri

The Indian Institute of Legal Studies (IILS), Dagapur, Siliguri is pleased to highlight the experiential learning initiative undertaken by the students of BBA LL.B. (Hons.), Semester V, through an educational visit to the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Jalpaiguri on 15 September 2026 under the supervision of Ms. Sufia Sheikh, Assistant Professor of Law, Indian Institute of Legal Studies.

As part of their Service Learning under the Consumer Protection Act, the students visited the Commission to gain first-hand exposure to the functioning of consumer dispute redressal institutions and to understand the practical application of consumer protection law.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to interact with Shri N. D. Barman, President, and Adv. S. K. Fazal, Member, District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Jalpaiguri. The interaction provided valuable insights into the practical functioning of the Commission, consumer dispute proceedings, examination of evidence, hearings, orders and disposal of complaints.

The students also undertook a case-study based empirical exercise, examining consumer disputes relating to insurance, housing finance, electricity services and banking/co-operative banking services. They studied five cases and explored the issues, evidence, legal principles and decisions involved in consumer dispute adjudication.

A significant component of the visit was a structured interaction on the impact of misleading advertisements on consumer buying decisions. The discussion highlighted the importance of documentary and digital evidence, challenges posed by social-media and influencer advertising, and the role of monitoring in addressing misleading advertisements.
