22-05-2026

An empirical research study on “Legal Awareness and Working Conditions of Gig Workers in the E-commerce Delivery Sector: An Empirical Study in Siliguri” was conducted by Group–1 students as part of their academic curriculum. The study focuses on examining the level of legal awareness among gig workers engaged in the e-commerce delivery sector and analysing their working conditions, particularly with regard to labour rights, social security benefits, and employment conditions.

The research adopted the method of purposive sampling, wherein gig workers associated with e-commerce delivery platforms were selected for the study in order to gain practical insights into the realities of platform-based employment in Siliguri.

As part of the field-based empirical research, the students visited the Flipkart Minutes Office at Darjeeling More, Siliguri, where interactions were conducted with gig workers and managerial personnel to understand the operational structure and working environment of the delivery sector. The study involved a sample size of five gig workers along with one office manager, enabling the researchers to collect information regarding employment conditions, working hours, legal awareness, and the availability of social security measures for delivery personnel.

The research further seeks to analyse the extent to which gig workers are aware of their legal rights and the challenges faced in the rapidly growing platform economy. At present, reports and relevant information have been collected from the Flipkart Minutes office, and the synopsis of the study is under preparation.
