Field Visit on International Trade and Customs Law
22-05-2026
A special empirical research study on “Cross-Border Trade between India and Nepal: An Empirical Study of the Panitanki–Kakkarbhitta Border” was conducted by the students of X Semester under the guidance of Dr. Aditya Awasthi.
The study aimed to examine the practical realities of cross-border trade operations and the functioning of trade facilitation mechanisms at the Panitanki–Kakkarbhitta border, which serves as an important gateway for Indo-Nepal commerce. As part of the research, the students were provided with an opportunity to interact with the Superintendent-in-Charge of the Panitanki Land Customs Station, enabling them to gain valuable insights into customs administration and border trade management.
The field visit provided the students with first-hand exposure to customs clearance procedures, transportation challenges, and infrastructural limitations affecting cross-border trade activities. The researchers observed issues such as truck congestion, transportation delays, lack of cold storage facilities, absence of 24x7 testing facilities, and difficulties in inter-agency coordination among Customs, SSB, Plant Quarantine, and FSSAI authorities.
The study further helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical understanding of International Trade Law and Customs Law by highlighting the operational challenges faced at the border and the necessity for infrastructural development and digital integration to improve trade facilitation and efficiency.
