Intra-Class ADR Trials 2026 - Bridging Legal Theory with Practical Dispute Resolution
17-04-2026
The ADR Society of Indian Institute of Legal Studies proudly introduced Intra-Class ADR Trials for the 5-Year B.A./BBA./B.Com LL.B (Hons.) 8th Semester students as a curriculum-based practical exercise to be conducted every Friday. The first successful session was held on 10/04/2026 (Friday), marking the beginning of an innovative approach to legal education that bridges the gap between theory and practice. This initiative aims to equip students with hands-on experience in dispute resolution through structured simulations based on Insurance Law, Land and Tenancy Law, and Banking Laws, thereby enhancing professional skills in advocacy, drafting, evidentiary analysis, and effective dispute resolution through arbitration, mediation, and negotiation.
The inaugural trial featured a detailed arbitration moot problem based on the West Bengal Premises Tenancy Act, 1997, reflecting real-life landlord-tenant disputes in Siliguri. The dispute raised significant legal questions on arbitrability, validity of arbitration clauses, eviction rights, and adjustment of repair expenses against rent under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, enabling students to engage deeply with statutory interpretation and practical legal challenges in a simulated arbitral tribunal setting.
The competition witnessed active participation from multiple teams—Team R1 (Madhumita Ruidas, Hritika Saha, Koyel Roy) vs Team C1 (Raul Roy, Rishita Sarkar, Rajat Biswas); Team R2 (Bhavya Tanaya, Prerna Mukherjee, Jiya Purohit) vs Team C2 (Rohit Sharma, Aradhya Shree Thapa, Manab Roy); and Team C3 (Kumari Mamta, Praweshika Subba, Kusum Lama) vs Team R3 (Akriti Dixit, Diya Patodia, Diksha Agarwal)—who demonstrated commendable advocacy skills, legal reasoning, and courtroom etiquette throughout the proceedings.
The trials were adjudicated by an esteemed panel of arbitrators comprising Mr. Arkaprava Bhattacharya, Mr. Bhaskar Choudhury, and Ms. Tripti Yonzon, whose insights and evaluation significantly enriched the learning experience. The event was successfully conducted under the guidance of Teacher Convenors ADRS Ms. Supriya and Ms. Sudiksha Ghatak, with the dedicated efforts of Student Head ADRS Mr. Chandan Sha (Sem VIII), along with the support of faculty convenors and subject teachers.
This initiative stands as a testament to experiential legal education, fostering the development of competent, confident, and practice-ready legal professionals prepared for the evolving landscape of dispute resolution.
