Intra-Class ADR Trials 2026 - Insurance Arbitration Challenge at Indian Institute of Legal Studies
18-04-2026
The ADR Society of Indian Institute of Legal Studies successfully conducted the Intra-Class ADR Trials on Friday, 17th April 2026, as part of its ongoing curriculum-based practical initiative for 5-Year B.A./BBA./B.Com LL.B (Hons.) 8th Semester students. Continuing the vision of experiential legal learning, the session provided students with a platform to apply theoretical concepts to real-life dispute resolution through structured arbitration proceedings, strengthening their advocacy, drafting, and analytical skills.
This week’s trial was based on a complex insurance dispute under the Insurance Act, 1938 and the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, revolving around a fire insurance claim involving allegations of misrepresentation, policy violation, and repudiation of claim. The problem highlighted crucial legal issues such as arbitrability of insurance disputes, the doctrine of uberrima fides (utmost good faith), validity of claim rejection, and entitlement to compensation, interest, and costs—providing students with deep insights into insurance law and arbitral jurisprudence.
The proceedings were adjudicated by an esteemed panel of arbitrators comprising Ms. Arpita Mitra Roy, Ms. Titas Biswas, and Ms. Sreeparna Das, whose valuable observations enriched the learning experience. The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from multiple teams—Team R1 (Sona Karmakar, Protima Biswas, Swarnaly Paul) vs Team C1 (Smaran Thapa, Chirag Chettri, Prashant Bhujel); Team R2 (Jasmin Khatun, Sanjukta Ghosh, Isha Prasad) vs Team C2 (Koustav Mitra, Tuhin Sarkar, Neeha Sarkar); and Team R3 (Soniya Kaur, Snigdha Karmakar, Maheru Muskan) vs Team C3 (Moumita Ghosh, Jeet Dutta, Subhadeep Paul), all of whom demonstrated commendable legal reasoning, advocacy, and courtroom discipline.
The event was successfully organized under the guidance of Faculty Convenor Ms. Tripti Yonzon, Teacher Convenors ADRS Ms. Supriya and Ms. Sudiksha Ghatak, and Student Head ADRS Mr. Chandan Sha (Sem VIII), along with the dedicated support of subject teachers Ms. Santana Dhali, Ms. Arpita Mitra Roy, and Mr. Debabrata Pyne.
The Intra-Class ADR Trials continue to reflect a strong commitment towards practical legal education, preparing students to become skilled, ethical, and practice-ready professionals in the evolving field of dispute resolution.
