The Indian Institute of Legal Studies proudly concluded Day 2 of its Special Lecture Series 2026 on 24th May, 2026 with an intellectually enriching session by Hon’ble Justice Biswajit Basu, Former Judge, The Hon’ble Calcutta High Court, on “Code of Civil Procedure & Limitation Act and Family Law-I (Hindu Law) – Practical Insights from the Bench.”
The session, held at the College Auditorium, witnessed the participation of students from the 5-Year B.A./B.B.A./B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) programme of Semester VIII & X and the 3-Year LL.B. programme of Semester II, IV & VI. The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Trishna Gurung, Principal-in-Charge, Indian Institute of Legal Studies, in the gracious presence of Dr. Joyjit Choudhury, Hon’ble Founder & Chairman, whose visionary leadership continues to inspire excellence in legal education.
Hon’ble Justice Biswajit Basu delivered profound practical insights on the Code of Civil Procedure, Family Law, temporary injunctions, decree and judgment, civil rights, custody disputes, alimony, adultery, succession rights, live-in relationships, Uniform Civil Code, same-sex marriage recognition, LGBTQ rights, pendency of cases, marriage registration laws, and the distinction between social and legal marriage. His thought-provoking words, “Good Lawyer never lies,” “Patience is the prime quality of a lawyer,” and his advice on confidence, ethics, and reading habits deeply resonated with students.
The highly interactive session reflected the curiosity and critical thinking of young legal minds, with discussions ranging from patriarchy in family laws to pre-nuptial agreements, restitution of cohabitation, and challenges faced by young advocates in legal practice. Justice Basu also emphasized that “welfare of the child is the prime focus of the judiciary” in custody matters and recommended students to read “My Experiments with Truth.”
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr. Trishna Gurung, expressing gratitude to Hon’ble Justice Biswajit Basu for sharing his invaluable judicial experience and practical wisdom with the students of IILS.
The two-day lecture series stood as a remarkable platform for academic enrichment, bridging classroom learning with real-life judicial perspectives and reaffirming the commitment of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies towards nurturing socially responsible and practically equipped legal professionals.
