World Environment Day 2026 Observed by Indian Institute of Legal Studies, Siliguri

Siliguri, 5 June 2026: The NSS Unit and IQAC of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies (IILS), Siliguri, organized a special observance of World Environment Day 2026 in collaboration with the West Range Office, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Darjeeling Wildlife Division. The programme aimed to promote environmental awareness, sustainable development, and community participation in environmental conservation.

The event featured a tree plantation drive, cleanliness campaign, awareness sessions, and a felicitation ceremony in Sukuna Forest Division, Dist: Darjeeling. The programme included addresses by AWLW Saroj Bhujel, Dr. T.K. Mishra, Forest Officer, West Range Office, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Darjeeling Wildlife Division, Dr. Aditya Awasthi, Assistant Professor of Law, IILS, and Ms. Tripti Yonzon, Assistant Professor of Law, IILS. The speakers highlighted the importance of afforestation, environmental protection, sustainable development, constitutional responsibilities, and the need for environmentally conscious practices.

Representing the student community, Pratiksha Sharma of BBA LL.B. (Hons.), Semester VI, spoke on responsible waste disposal and the role of youth in environmental stewardship. Forest Department officials also raised concerns regarding plastic pollution and waste accumulation in forest areas and its adverse impact on wildlife and ecosystems.

Similarly, as part of the Government of India's “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, saplings were planted by the Principal-in-Charge, faculty members, and students, symbolizing a collective commitment towards a greener future in the campus of Indian Institute of Legal Studies.

Students, faculty members, and Forest Department officials actively participated in the cleanliness drive, promoting responsible waste management and environmental responsibility. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, reaffirming the commitment of all stakeholders towards afforestation, environmental awareness, forest conservation, and sustainable living.
