Law (LL.B) can be pursued as a career by any individual after the person qualifies his or her class 12 examinations under any recognized board in India. That would be a 5 years integrated Law course. However, a person can also pursue a 3 years LL.B course after qualifying Graduation or post Graduation from any recognized University in India. After qualifying LL.B examinations, a person can pursue Post Graduation in Law i.e. Master of Laws (LL.M). Post graduation may be pursued with specialization in various subjects/areas. LL.M courses are offered after LL.B course in West Bengal in many LL.B colleges in Kolkata.

The post Graduate courses of law are offered both by National law Universities as well as traditional universities. Private law colleges also provides for LL.M. a student of law after completing his LL.B degree may opt for his post graduation either by clearing Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The National Law schools take admission for post graduation as per the rankings in CLAT while other institutes conduct separate entrance examinations for LL.M. however, any such exam may be appeared for by any candidate after completion of his LL.B course from any LL.B college in Kolkata, West Bengal or from any other state in India.

Some universities provide for LL.M or Master of Law courses as 1 year integrated program. While some universities, especially the traditional ones, provide for a 2 year integrated masters course.  Post Graduation in law may be pursued with specialization in certain areas of interest as per the choice of the students. Specialization on Intellectual property laws, Cyber laws, Trade or company laws, human rights, banking laws, etc can be pursued. However it is to be noted that the subjects taught in LL.M are also part of the course curriculum of LL.B course in West Bengal.

The difference being the standard of research that increases in the level of masters program.  The scope after post graduation in law course is that the post graduates can go for law teaching as their profession. Law colleges may hire people as lecturers and professors of law only if they have post-graduation in law as their basic qualification. Also expertise in subjects may add repute to the professionals as legal experts or legal consultants in various fields.
