‘GENOCIDE ‘A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY

Human are born free in the society and is considered to be one of the most civilized species in the universe.  Our world is a unique combination of different culture, religion, language groups and because of these diverse culture and practices Human Rights based society is formed. Although we are born humans still we are sometimes so intolerant towards the other races that we tend to consider them as and someone who is inferior and they have no right to survive in the society. Regrettably the practice of mass killing prevalent since many years is still prevalent in the present scenario. However we may claim that the society has changed but we still read cases of such inhuman practices of mass killing which is ruining the peace of the world as a whole. Such practices were prevalent when there was no law and order and the society believed that the one who is strong has the right of survival. War crimes are one such a curse which results in the most inhuman killing of humans as a large. Though these crimes are more broadly covered under international humanitarian law described as crimes against humanity, war crimes are sometimes the cases of mass murder. Genocide or Mass human killing is an intentional killing of certain people belonging to a particular ethnic group, class with an intention to weaken that particular group. The term Genocide did not exist till 1944 and was termed by Raphael Lemkin. It is referred as a specific term which is the horrific, violent crime against a certain group with intent to destroy the existence of the group. The United Nations in 1948, declared Genocide to be an international crime committed with an intention to destroy a national, ethnic racial or religious group. Some of the unforgettable genocides are that of an Angaf Genocide. The Angaf Campaign against the Kurdish population in 1980’s under the Saddam Hussein regime. Around 180,000 Kurds were killed, with several thousand still uncountable. Such Genocide is Rwandan Genocide in which the Turtis an ethnic group were slaughtered   by Hutu people. Rape, Mutilation and the deliberate spread of disease were also used as tools of terror. Pygmy Genocide is another such example of atrocities of the strong upon the less strong. Pygmy Tribes found in Central Africa who are less than 59 inches tall were also victim of mass killing. Holocast the Nazi Holocast under the leadership of Adolf Hitler was one of the worst Genocide so far. According to Article I of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide: “The Contracting Parties confirm that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or in time of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and punish.”s .  However even after passing of the convention nothing has been so noticeably changed. Genocide as termed as an international crime is a major threat to the society as by and large. As the developing states put up the atrocities upon the less developed or the poorer states who they think may be an obstacle to their development. Whatsoever in the end we have to realize that it is the humans who make the society   and until we learn to be tolerant this crime will take a dominance on the concept of Human Rights.
