JOURNEY FROM DEPENDENCE TO INDEPENDENCE: ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The role of women in the 21st century has not evolved over night. There have been struggles, differences in opinion, realizations, redefining of roles and so much more. The fact that men and women are an integral part of the society and that the growth and development of the society cannot happen if the interest of the ‘weaker’ section is ignored has been acknowledged just few years ago. The role of women in the development and growth of the society has been a remarkable one, but has always been ignored and underestimated. It is important to integrate the interest and well-being of women into the main stream. The role of women has been impacted and affected because of globalization and it has, to a very great extent, contributed in bringing women into the fore front and in making them a major part of the work force. Today, because of globalization, the contribution of women in the total GDP of our country has also been an impressive one. But globalization at the same time makes women vulnerable to exploitation and the measures so taken to guarantee their safety is not sufficient. So, we can say that the contribution of women can be made effective only when the interest of women is guaranteed and their contribution is valued. The growing role of women in politics, their contribution in tackling terrorism, the need to speak up for the rights of the prostitutes and the need for their rehabilitation are also some of the shifts that has been seen in recent years. Equality and the role of women in society are also major issues in the society that has to be taken into consideration.
