Universal Basic Income

Social Security is the welfare mechanism aided by the government towards the weaker section of the society. In other words social security is the broad model of social well being and the method that ensures it.  Article 22 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has preserved the notion of social security as every member of the society has the solemn right to social security and the same is enforceable through national and international effort and cooperation. This has to be attained through state resources and it must withstand the economic, social and cultural right of the nation which in turn must aid in personality development of the nation and most particularly its subjects.

Social Security may include Social Insurance, Social Services and Social Basic Necessities. Out of this three needs basic necessities stands holds the prioritized position in the human life. Government main focus is to provide basic amenities and necessaries of life to its citizen. United Nation has also implemented the activity to provide basic necessaries of life to the weaker section of the society in the form of United Nation Development Programme. Apart from Basic necessities of life, Social Protection is an important aspect of life which comes under the purview of Social Insurance and Social Services. Social Protection of the common citizen of life has been asserted by the International Labour Organization who looks upon the welfare mechanism of the labor class people of the Nation.

In India

In the light of the social security and protection of the weaker section of the society India has already implemented welfare schemes and Directives to each and every States in the Indian Constitution. To implement the welfare mechanism in more effective manner such that all the people of the weaker section of the society can have an access to the basic necessaries of life. Universal Basic Income is the recent measure adopted by the Government of India where its main agenda is to provide its people with Rs. 1,000/- to each and every individual and not to the household. Universal Basic Income Scheme is an alternative to surplus of state subsidies for poverty alleviation program.

Universal Basic Income Scheme of India is projected towards uplifting the rural and urban poor who are below the poverty line and doesn’t have proper access to basic necessities of life and has no social protection in the society. Indian Government is directed towards making India great in the International Forum with no poverty existing the country. Under this scheme around 20 million families is going to get benefitted and the same is also implemented in the Union Budget 2107.

India’s GDP ratio is less than 17% so implementing Universal Basic Income scheme in the health care and physical infrastructure will remain inadequate. Nevertheless universal coverage of benefits will remain awaited in covering greater levels of prosperity.  The purpose to have universal basic income is sound but India needs greater level of richness (money) to afford such a huge scheme.
