Assistant Professor of Law

Mr. Debabrata Pyne is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Law at the Indian Institute of Legal Studies, having joined the institution on 6th November 2024. He completed his schooling at Manindra Nath High School, Coochbehar, and pursued his B.A.LL.B (Hons.) degree from the Department of Law, University of North Bengal (2016–2021), where he graduated with First Class and secured the 2nd position. He went on to obtain his LL.M from the same department (2021–2023) with a specialization in Public Law, securing High Second Class with a 7.70 CGPA. His dissertation, titled “Evaluation of Marital Rape as an Unforeseen Offence in India”, was supervised by Prof. Dr. Rathin Bandyopadhyay. He qualified the UGC NET in June 2024.

His areas of academic interest include Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and Civil Law, with a particular focus on the Law of Property and the Law of Contract. He has actively participated in various intra- and inter-departmental moot court competitions, mock trials, and client counselling competitions. He also completed a certificate course on Criminal Law Based upon Rights of Women and Legal Protection in 2021 under the aegis of Law Learners. In addition, he has participated in several national webinars during 2020–2021, presented a paper on Right to Education at a seminar organized by the Department of Law, University of North Bengal in March 2023, and submitted a paper on Human Trafficking at a national seminar organized by Jalpaiguri Law College on 22nd March 2025.
