An educational outreach visit to the Immigration Office in Jaigaon, Alipurduar offered insightful information about the real-world implementation of Indian citizenship and immigration laws. Students gained a thorough understanding of how legal frameworks controlling immigration, nationality, and cross-border travel function in practical situations thanks to the visit. It emphasized how immigration authorities support legal migration and travel while upholding national security.
The students of The BA LL.B. (VI,VIII and X semesters) watched a variety of legal and administrative processes at the immigration office, such as cross-border movement procedures, document verification, passport inspection, and visa requirements. The Officer-In-Charge, gave an example of how passport control procedures, emigration laws, and citizenship laws are carried out on a daily basis. Students were exposed first hand to the processes involved in people's entry and departure, particularly at an international border point such as Jaigaon. The visit highlighted the importance of important laws like the The Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, Passport Act of 1967, and the Citizenship Act of 1955 in controlling migration and guaranteeing the legal movement of people. In order to stop illegal immigration and human trafficking, officials also emphasized the significance of adhering to documentation requirements, identity verification, and security checks. It was also discussed how authorities keep records, keep an eye on foreign nationals, and make sure that international protocols are followed. The practical difficulties faced by immigration officers, such as dealing with incomplete paperwork, suspicious movements, and emergency situations, were explained to the students. Students' comprehension of legal processes and administrative operations was improved by the interaction, which helped close the gap between theoretical knowledge and actual law enforcement.
The visit also highlighted the importance of citizenship and emigration laws in safeguarding national interests while protecting individual rights. It emphasized how these laws help to maintain order, security, and transparency in cross-border transactions.
Overall, the field visit was a valuable educational experience, allowing students to understand the real-world implications of legal provisions studied in class. Mr. Shuvam Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Law, coordinated the visit, ensuring that all participants had a meaningful and informative learning experience.
