Legal Aid and Legal Awareness Programme at Maynaguri Road High School

On 14 September 2026, the Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar, was invited by Maynaguri Road High School to organize a Legal Aid and Legal Awareness Programme for the students. The objective of the programme was to create awareness among students about important legal issues affecting individuals and society and to familiarize them with laws that are relevant to their everyday lives.
The programme primarily focused on increasing social crimes, educational rights, cybercrimes, and the lack of awareness regarding various legal protections available to individuals, particularly children. Special emphasis was placed on crimes against children and the importance of creating awareness among students regarding their legal rights, safety, and available remedies.
The session was conducted in an interactive and engaging manner and received active participation from the students as well as several teachers of the school. The programme was conducted by a faculty member along with students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar, who addressed various contemporary legal issues in a simple and accessible manner.
Speakers and Topics
Dr. Sachin Singh, Assistant Professor of Law, addressed the critical issues of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. He explained the nature of such offences, the legal protections available to children, and the various measures that can be taken to prevent and report such incidents.
Mr. Abhishek Paul, LL.B. Semester V, delivered a session on Cyber laws and cybercrimes. He discussed the growing concerns associated with the use of digital technology and explained the risks faced by children and students in the cyber world. Particular emphasis was placed on the responsible use of mobile phones, social media, and other digital platforms by children below 18 years of age, along with the need for awareness regarding online safety and cyber offences.
Mr. Arbhendu Chakraborty, LL.B. Semester III, spoke on the Right to Education as a fundamental right under Article 21A of the Constitution of India. He explained the relationship between Articles 14, 19, 21, and 21A and highlighted the constitutional framework protecting educational rights. He particularly emphasised the right to free and compulsory education for children under Article 21A and the importance of ensuring access to education without discrimination.
The programme was valuable both as a legal awareness initiative and as an academic learning experience. It provided the students of the Indian Institute of Legal Studies, Cooch Behar, with an opportunity to develop their communication, presentation, and community-engagement skills. At the same time, the programme enabled the students and teachers of Maynaguri Road High School to gain meaningful insights into important legal issues concerning child protection, cyber safety, and educational rights.
Overall, the programme contributed towards promoting legal literacy among school students and encouraging greater awareness of legal rights, responsibilities, and remedies in everyday life.
