Legal Aid Awareness Session - Empowering Young Citizens Through Legal Literacy

The Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar organised a Legal Aid Awareness Session on 10/08/2026 at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, for students of Classes IX–XII along with their teachers.

The session featured four speakers, each unpacking a legal theme relevant to young citizens in everyday, accessible language:

1. Mr. Kushal Sharma, Assistant Professor of Law, spoke on “Right to Well Being: Legal Dimension of Mental Health for Young Persons,” highlighting recent Supreme Court directions safeguarding student mental health.

2. Ms. Priyangana Dutta, B.A., LL.B(Hons.) Sem-VII, spoke on “Anti-Ragging Laws and Discipline in Educational Institutions,” outlining the legal safeguards that protect students from ragging and harassment on campus.

3. Ms. Simi Priya Choudhary, B.A., LL.B(Hons.) Sem-VII, spoke on “Defamation Laws: Protecting Reputation in the Age of Social Media,” addressing how reputation and free speech are balanced in an era of online communication.

4. Ms. Chanchal Sharma, B.A., LL.B(Hons.) Sem-V, spoke on “Pollution Free Environment as a Fundamental Right and Relevant Regulations,” explaining the constitutional and statutory framework protecting the right to a clean environment.

The session was designed to make young students aware that the law is not a distant institution but a living framework that protects them daily at school, online, and in their surroundings.

Students actively participated with questions, and teachers appreciated the initiative as a valuable addition to student well-being and civic education.

We continue to conduct such outreach sessions under its Legal Aid Awareness initiative, aimed at spreading legal literacy among young citizens.
