Legal awareness and legal aid are important instruments for educating, empowering, and creating awareness about issues involving law. Legal awareness creates awareness among citizens about their fundamental rights and duties enshrined under the Constitution of India and helps them understand various contemporary legal issues and challenges existing in society.
Legal aid is an instrument of social justice that provides free legal assistance to weaker and economically disadvantaged sections of society. The main objective of inserting Article 39A in the Constitution of India is to ensure that justice is not denied to any person merely because of economic or other disabilities. Legal services include providing free legal aid to weaker and marginalized sections of Indian society who fall within the purview of Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
To disseminate legal awareness among the students of Classes VIII, IX, X and XI, a Legal Awareness Programme-cum-Legal Aid Seminar was organised by the Indian Institute of Legal Studies Cooch Behar, at Sonapur B.K. Girls’ High School, Sonapur, Alipurduar, on 15.09.2026.
The programme primarily focused on the significance of legal aid, the role of NALSA, and the importance of legal awareness in present-day society. It further discussed the issues and challenges relating to human trafficking in India, its various dimensions, and possible measures for addressing the problem. The programme also covered cybercrime, its legislative and controlling mechanisms, recent trends, and the challenges faced by people, particularly in rural areas.
